What are your thoughts and feelings before you went to the area?

What are your thoughts and feelings before you went to the area?

Service Learning is one of the most exciting experiences of my stay in college. Actually, I got excited and privileged when I knew that there would be service learning in our Physio class. I also felt happy and honored to be able to impart my learnings to the other students, thus, help them in a way.

At first, I thought of our service learning as something unusual since we’re going to conduct it in the Miriam College community. I was also not sure in sharing my thoughts and knowledge regarding the harmful effects of drugs since I am not that aware and familiar of the different types of drugs that may cause harm on the human brain. I am a bit afraid that our group might share or convey the wrong information to the students.

I always think about service learning activity as a means of applying and sharing the things that I have learned in class. Honestly, I always feel excited whenever I hear about doing service learning activities, because it means to me that I will be able to meet new people again, socialize, and share a little of what I know. Lastly, I think of service learning activities as the Miriam College’s way of making its students exhibit their knowledge in different manners and aspects and also as a way of showing off that we could also be an instrument for learning even in simple ways.

At first, I was nervous because my group mates and I were not able to obtain some background information about our selected community (MC classes). I think it would really benefited us if we have provided a focus group discussion prior to our activity so as to hear some of the students' expectations and concerns regarding drugs. Nevertheless, my group mates and I made sure that our service learning will help the first year students to connect classroom learning to real life setting by presenting to them the basic and comprehensive view of concepts about understanding drugs.

Before the implementation of the service learning activity, I thought of the possibilities that could happen. I hoped that the students would listen to us so that we’ll be able to send our message clearly. I also hoped that I will learn something from the activity.

Service learning is a fun way of applying what we’ve learned from the classroom. Our service learning experience is unforgettable. When I first learned that we are going to have it in two MC-101 classes, I became very excited because it will be different from the usual service learning we had before. I was also nervous because we have to be very good because we will be presenting to our schoolmates and I really wanted them to learn from us. We prepared for our presentation and made sure that it will be a fun and learning experience for the students and also to us.

What are your thoughts and feelings during the service-learning meeting?

Honestly, at first I was quite nervous by the time we went into the class because it felt so intimidating especially the students themselves. I felt like with their aura, they could just ignore us and not take the learning and/or the activity itself seriously. But I was wrong with all my assumptions because surprisingly, they really cooperated well throughout the entire session.

During the service learning activity, I was nervous facing the MC-101 students since I thought that we might express wrong information. However, I was happy for they showed cooperation and enthusiasm in participating in our activity. Lastly, I enjoyed the whole service learning activity process.

While we were doing the service learning activity, I actually felt the same way that I did during the previous service learning activities that I’ve done. I felt much enjoyment on what I was doing and that I really felt like being able to help other people learn. Lastly, I felt like I was expecting a lot more from myself, and that I ended up asking myself, “Am I only doing this service learning activity for the sake of fulfilling my school requirements?”.

All students part of our service learning were really participative. They listen very well as we discuss issues concerning drugs. These students enliven the discussion as they continually share their ideas with the class. After the discussion, they engaged in, by getting involved in our second activity- role playing.

During the service learning, I did not have a hard time presenting my part. However, during the activity we made them do, I was overwhelmed with the noise of the students and when we asked them to tone down their voices, they wouldn’t listen. It made me realize that being a professor or teacher is harder than I expected.

During the service learning, I was happy that the students are interacting with us. I noticed that they are interested to know more about drugs. We discussed different drugs that are common to teenagers. We told them about the harmful effects of these drugs. After discussing, we asked them to pick a drug and prepare a short play about the effects of that drug. I was surprised that they really listened to us and their presentations are all good.
